PROJECT CHRISTIAN ART
PATHOLOGY, SYMBOLISM, SOCIETY
Throughout its millennial history, the Christian Church has been a privileged place for the production of works of art. From funerary images in Christian catacombs, to ex voto, to the development of iconographic programs in medieval and modern churches and monasteries, the Church has encouraged and promoted artistic creation as an expression and vehicle of faith.
More recently, the icono-diagnostic approach has enabled the identification of pathological/pseudo-pathological conditions in Christian art. The aim of the project is to conduct a retrospective diagnosis of various pathological conditions identifiable in works of Christian art.
In parallel, for each work analyzed, the project will explore the social, socio-economic, political and religious conditions that led the artists and their patrons to create it.
Finally, an explanation of the theological significance associated with the representation of human populations belonging to different religions over the centuries will be given.
Pendant son histoire millénaire, l’Église chrétienne a été un lieu privilégié de production d’œuvres d’art. A partir des images funéraires dans les catacombes chrétiennes, aux ex voto, jusqu’au développement des programmes iconographiques dans les églises et les monastères médiévaux et modernes, l’Église a encouragé et promu la création artistique comme expression et véhicule de la foi. Plus récemment, l’approche icono-diagnostic a permis l’identification de conditions pathologiques/pseudo-pathologiques dans l’art chrétien.
Le but du projet est de conduire un diagnostic rétrospectif de différentes conditions pathologiques identifiables dans les œuvres d’art chrétien.
En parallèle, pour chaque œuvre analysée, le projet explorera les conditions sociales, socio-économiques, politiques et religieuses qui ont conduit les artistes et leur patrons à sa réalisation.
Enfin, une explication de la signification théologique associée à la représentation de populations humaines appartenant à différentes religions au fil des siècles sera donné
